“If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito.” — African proverb
Well yes, there were mosquitos! But there was so much more that even these tiny pains in the behind couldn’t ruin the experience.
I am still going back in my mind (with the help of a few photos) quite often to the trekking in the wilderness of the untouched (literally!) afar region, which we did with my bushman, one funny spaniard, and 5 french friends (with the locals accompanying; a guide, a translator, a cook, 2 police/military, 4 camel pullers and 7 camels = that’s a combo!) last year. It was the most exhausting (both physically and mentally) trip i’ve ever made, but it was worth every sweat, blood and tear; overwhelmed by the stunning, (bold and) beautiful nature of the afar region, by the landscapes and views of endless no man’s land with no one around (for days, something i thought doesn’t exist anymore), and finally by the people we later encountered and who were beyond hospitable.
Since so many of you my friends are adventurous to say the least and since no travel agent has (yet) found this hidden gem, we went out of our minds and decided to organize a trekking trip to the afar region in Ethiopia, combined with Djibouti (whale sharks, diving, etc). Have a look at the (so far just rough) program and let us know if you’re tempted – max 8 lucky people will be able to join us!
That said, this is a shout to all of you who are NOT turned off by the thought of crossing waters (full of crocos) with reed rafts, sleeping under the stars (surrounded by hyenas, possibly panthers), hiking mountains, desert, and high reeds (and getting completely dirty and wet because water level has risen to belly level), relying on a caravan of camels (which you may loose for days, thus relying on nomad hospitality for food and water and a matt to sleep on) and so on. If you recognize yourself from the description, ping me – i am not kidding, it is a once-in-a-lifetime-experience and sharing it with friends would make it even more special. If you didn’t already, get inspired here.
So, who’s in? 🙂
